This verse from Psalms is not just a metaphorical “taste” of God but sensing God and allowing God to enter within through experience. The food we eat becomes part of us. It repairs our body and gives energy for our cells to work. In the same way when we "taste" of God, we allow His Spirit to enter within and repair and energize us.

The God that Christians worship – came down in human form in Jesus Christ. He walked and talked with a group of followers for three years then was crucified and died a painful horrible death- even though he lived a sinless life. This is a historical fact. Jesus clashed with religious leaders of his day who made a career of making themselves right with God through religious practices. Jesus clashed with political leaders who wanted to maintain popularity and refused to go against the crowd.

In one of Jesus' sermons he spoke about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. This was a horrific idea to the religious leaders of his day and even many of his followers. Yet on the day before he was crucified Jesus lifted up a goblet of wine and shared it with his followers saying “drink this as my blood shed for you as a symbol of the new covenant.” He broke bread and shared the pieces with the disciples saying “eat of this bread – my body broken for you.” Each of these food symbols have been used ever since to signify that someone belongs to God’s family. This Eucharist meal is shared with believers around the world to signify our unity with Jesus and each other. When we internalize the sacrifice that Jesus went through on our behalf- and truly realize the exchange that Jesus died on my behalf it changes my way of thinking and behaving. God did that for me so that I can become part of His family. This is God's goodness demonstrated through sacrificial love. My part is to taste of the Lord and allow Him to be my spiritual nutrition.

In this way we taste and see that God is good. It was God’s goodness which sent Jesus to die. It was God’s goodness which raised him from the dead. It was God’s goodness which welcomes you to be part of God’s kingdom as a child of God.

Celebrate God's goodness today by having a meal with someone and sharing the good news.
